Why President Museveni and the NRM should reject the 45 years Amendment

By Katabarwa Ronald ronaldkatabarwa@gmail.com Record straight, I write this as an NRM supporter and leader at some level. Two weeks ago, news came in on how the NRM parliamentary Caucus was plotting yet another constitutional amendment to bar those below 45 years from running for President. We must first remind ourselves that this is the same Article that was amended in December, 2017, kicking out the 35 and 75 as age cap for the Presidency. I am opposed to this Amendment and my point of departure with the caucus, is informed by four areas. However, I will need guidance if I am wrong. We cannot amend the constitution out of panic. Such an amendment clearly shows that the NRM parliamentarians have started doing what they do best- panicking. President Museveni throughout the ages has been daring where nobody else dares.  He has been Amending the Constitution towards bravery rather than cowardice. In 1971 while in Nairobi, John Kazoora(Uncle to maama J...

Connivance between Managers and Auditors hamper SACCO growth in Ntungamo

The union of   savings and credit cooperative societies in Ntungamo district and the local government leaders have expressed concern over procured external auditors for the SACCOS in the district conniving with managers to defraud the savings and credit organizations, arguing for black listing of some audit firms. The leaders says while the external auditors are procured by board and general assemblies of SACCOS, they in most cases do not represent the interest of SACCO members and cook figures at times given to them by managers and make opinions that the Saccos are healthy but in few months they fail an issue causing outrage. The Ntungamo SACCOs union chairperson Ndibarema Wabeitwababo said most of the opinions presented by auditors do not reflect what is in SACCOs and at times the figures are just meant to make shareholders happy while the managers and staff are stealing from members a reason most members don’t share profit. Speaking during the Nyakyera Farmers S...

Concern as More Children die due to lack of oxygen in hospitals

Path Uganda, a Nnon governmental organisation advocating for good health raises concern over the absence of medical oxygen in government hospitals a threat that has continued to claim lives that probably would have been saved. According to the senior Advocacy officer at Path Hasifah Naluyiga, a total of 13700 children die annually in Uganda of pneumonia, a disease that is related to blockage of air circulation with in the body and this can be helped by usage of medical oxygen. The problem is high in lower government health facilities at level III and IV where oxygen supply stands at 13% and 68% respectively yet these are facilities that serve majority people in localities. Naluyiga highlights challenges surrounding the availability of oxygen in hospitals including lack of equipment for storing oxygen, poor managerial skills by health workers which she says government needs to work upon immediately to save lives. According to information by PATH, 60% of oxygen...

Parliament is today having a special sitting to verify whether government has 100% shares in Uganda Airlines contrary to earlier reports that were indicating that 99% of the total shares are owned by an individual. The special sitting is called by clerk to parliament, Jane Kibirige slated for today 10am,after parliament in yesterday's sitting did not get a report from the budget committee as requested. The New Uganda Airlines plane The sitting is fixed because if government fails to beat the deadline of 29th march to the payment for funds meant for the two Bombardier jets to be used by Uganda National Airlines will incur costs. The Minister of Works  Azuba Ntege earlier  said that the two bombardier jets are ready for delivery and the only delay has come from the failure to pay the deposit payments and failure to meet the renegotiated agreement, it will mean Uganda will have to incur costs of insurance, parking fees as the planes lie idle with the manufacture...
